Another Great Opportunity!

12th Annual Celebration of Cultures Festival presented by Nashville Metro Parks and Recreation & Scarritt-Bennett Center

October 4, 2008 - 10:00am
Centennial Park
Named as one of the Southeast Tourism Society's Top 20 Events, the Celebration of Cultures Festival returns for the 12th year as the region's largest and most authentic multi-cultural festival. This event celebrates and embraces diversity by respecting, understanding and appreciating the cultures of the Greater Nashville population through a fun-filled day of music, dance, art, food, children's activities, a marketplace and an educational component known as "The Villages" that gives an authentic glimpse of daily life in over 13 different countries. Over 30 ethnic dance and musical performances will be featured on multiple stages and over 25 food vendors will offer a sampling of exotic foods from around the globe. Special highlights this year include a performance by Grammy-nominated, Honorary Chair singer/songwriter Beth Neilsen Chapman, as well as a performance by the Russian folk band Moscow Nights. At the center of Centennial Park is the Parthenon, built for Tennessee's 1897 Centennial Exposition. A recreation of the 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of this replica of the original Parthenon in Athens. Inside is the city of Nashville's art museum. The permanent collection is a group of 63 paintings by 19th and 20th century American artists.

Generational Politics

As the presidential election moves into full swing, and all the candidates are known...here is an interesting way to study each of them...by looking at the GENERATION ARCH-TYPE they belong to. Although these are generalizations of a particular TYPE of generation, it can be revealing. So take a look and see if it helps in understanding a little bit more about the dynamics of WHO the candidates are, and what they might look like as executive leaders of the nation.

I will list the candidates in order of their GENERATION'S position in time.

John McCain is from the SILENT GENERATION Born 1925-1942

Joseph Biden is from the SILENT GENERATION Born 1925-1942

Barack Obama is from GENERATION X or the 13th GEN Born 1961-1981

Sarah Palin is from GENERATION X or the 13th GEN Born 1961-1981

It is interesting to note, that the past two presidents, were both from the Baby-Boom generation, and although that generation controlled the presidency for the past 16 years, do not appear in this presidential race.

If McCain does not win this election, his generation will be the only one in the history of the United States to have never elected a president, and it is very unlikely someone from that generation will be elected in the next election, considering the age of that generation.

For more information about the CYCLES of HISTORY and the various GENERATIONS checkout the book THE FOURTH TURNING by WILLIAM STRAUSS and NEIL HOWE. It deals with the cycles of American History from the past 500 years, and looks at what things might look like in the future as well.

7th Grade Syllabus Change

We will NOT do the WORLD HISTORY ATLAS ACTIVITY "Civilization in Ancient Mesopotamia." You may draw a line through this on your Syllabus.

Mr. Beavers and His Chinese Photography

I submitted a photograph from the trip to China, to a contest that the Tennessean newspaper was running, and it was selected (out of around 1200 photos I believe) as one of the top 20 finalists!

That's pretty exciting. It's nothing huge, just a local contest, but my first one I've been in since I started fooling around with photography. The winner wins like $100 or something.

I'm just pumped one of my photographs made it to the Top 20. =)

If you don't mind taking 10 seconds and going to the following link to vote for my photo...

I'm PHOTO #1

...so easy to find.... I sure would appreciate it.

Feel free to fwd this to others that wouldn't mind taking a moment to vote!

My photo is of The Sacred Way, in Beijing, China.

The day it was pouring down rain, and of course seems to have added to the total aura of the place.

Thanks!
Paul
